11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. ACADEMIC ADVISING: ITS IMPORTANCE AND HOW IT WORKS, Recreation Center
How can you get the most out of your liberal arts education at Carleton? Who can assist you with navigating all the rules, policies, and graduation requirements? And who is your “go to” person to help you adjust to academic life, set appropriate goals, and work through obstacles you encounter? Answer: your academic adviser. In this session you’ll hear about academic advising and the many roles academic advisers play in supporting your success at Carleton.

12:30 – 1:30 p.m. GROUP MEETINGS WITH ACADEMIC ADVISERS & LUNCH, Various Locations
This is an opportunity to meet your adviser and your advising group. Advising is a two-way street; you’ll want to do your part to make this a successful relationship. Check Workday online to learn the name of your academic adviser. Your NSW Leader will provide your unique meeting location at breakfast. Boxed lunches will be provided in the Recreation Center Fieldhouse. Dining halls will be closed to new students for lunch. Faculty & Staff Advisor lunches will be distributed in Sayles-Hill, Great Space.

1:30 – 3:00 p.m. LANGUAGE PLACEMENT, Language and Dining Center (LDC) Classrooms
Retesting to confirm placement out of further language study, language interviews, and placement testing for students not able to complete online testing.

1:45 – 3:00 p.m. MUSIC FEST, Weitz Center for Creativity, Kracum Performance Hall
The Music Department invites you to learn about music at Carleton and how you can get involved. This presentation will also include information about private lessons, chamber music, choral and instrumental ensembles. Sign-up for auditions.

3:15 – 4:15 p.m. CARLETON 101: YOUR ACADEMIC JOURNEY BEGINS HERE, Recreation Center
You may have many questions about the transition to college-level work and how to navigate college life successfully. This session will provide an overview of what to expect in your classes, how to use the many academic resources available to you, and tips for balancing coursework with activities outside of the classroom. We will answer some of your most burning questions, as well as some of the questions you might not have thought to ask yet: How do I navigate the 10-week term successfully? What are office hours? How do I balance the many demands on my time? What is academic integrity and why is it important? Let’s make sure you start your college experience on the right foot!

Carleton prides itself on its many sustainability initiatives. Student Sustainability Assistants (STAs) will explain a few major ways you can support climate action on campus and in our nearby community. Sponsored by the Sustainability Office.

4:45 – 5:30 p.m. CLASS PHOTO, Fields behind the Recreation Center
A brief presentation and welcome to campus from the Carleton Young Alumni Team in which you’ll learn more about ways to get involved with the campus and alumni community. Bring your smiles for your first official class photo.

5:30 – 7:30 p.m. DINNER WITH YOUR NSW GROUP
Exact meeting location will be determined in previous NSW group meetings. Don’t forget to bring your OneCard to access your meal plan.

7:30 p.m. NSW EVENING ACTIVITIES, Various Locations
Take a break from talks, relax, and meet some new people! An opportunity to mingle outside of your NSW Group and start widening your connections at Carleton.

  • 7:30 p.m. – Ready, Set, Rec!, Recreation Center
    Take some time to get to know Carleton’s Rec Center. Try the rock wall and the bouldering cave, get accustomed to the fitness center with our Team Leaders, or take an introductory yoga class in the studio. There will also be lawn games, pizza, and snacks.
  • 9:00 p.m. – OUTDOOR MOVIE: Ratatouille, Bald Spot
    Set mostly in Paris, a young rat Remy, dreams of becoming a chef at Auguste Gusteau’s restaurant and tries to achieve his goal by forming an unlikely alliance with the restaurant’s garbage boy, Alfredo Linguini. Run time: 111 minutes. Snacks and drinks provided.
