Chinese Music Ensemble Concert

2 March 2016

The Carleton Chinese Ensemble performed Sunday, February 2016 in the concert hall. Their concert, which is composed of Chinese folk and classical music, also featured performances by the Korean Drum Combo and World Music Chamber Ensemble, who widened the scope of the concert to that of a global scale.

The Chinese Ensemble, founded 10 years ago by current director Gao Hong, has grown from 6-8 members to 14-20 members. They have been accompanied by a variety of combos, including Korean Drum Ensemble, String Quartet, Guzheng Ensemble, and Pipa Ensemble, and have performed, with much acclaim, at Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Mall of America, ASIANetwork Conference in Chicago.

The musical group is composed of a mix of Chinese and non-Chinese Carleton students, who utilize a mix of Chinese and Western instruments. Many first-year students had never played in an ensemble setting before joining the ensemble, but with much practice and direction from Gao Hong, they have become better musicians who were all performance-ready.
