Junior and Senior Recitals
The Music Department provides space and support for the academic recitals of music students who meet the requirements listed below:
The requirements for performing an official department supported recital are as follows:
1. Student must be:
A junior or senior music performance minor OR a registered senior music major or music minor OR enrolled in MUSC 299 OR a senior student taking music lessons
2. Student must have approval from their instructor to perform a recital.
3. Student’s instructor must also approve the length of the recital. Recitals can either be a 1/2 recital, which is a max of 30 minutes long, or a full recital, which is a max of 1 hour long.
If your student meets the requirements and would like to perform a recital and you as the instructor approve, please direct the student to this page to submit a request: Student Recital Requests.
Student recitals must requested at least one term in advance and are scheduled through Alexi Carlson. Students must have the approval from their instructor to perform a Junior or Senior Student Recital. The instructor must also approve the length of the recital which can be a half recital (30 mins) or full recital (1 hour).
Student Recitals are typically scheduled on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in the late morning, afternoon or early evening. Recitals may be anytime week 3-10 during the term as long as the instructor approves (i.e. a student may perform a recital week 3 of the term if the instructor agrees that they will be ready). There are often multiple recitals in a day. All student recitals are held in Applebaum Hall.
Junior and Senior Recitals will be scheduled only after the Performing Activities Coordinator confirms that the instructor has approved the performance and length. For such recitals the department will print programs, provided all required information is received no later than two weeks before the recital. Programs will not include texts, translations, or program notes. Students who wish to have such texts, translations, etc., may submit copy-ready notes no later than one week prior to the recital.
Junior and Senior recitals will be included on the Music Department web page/events calendar. Student recitals will also be included in the Weitz Weekly email blast and submitted to promotion in Carleton Today (inclusion in Carleton Today is not guaranteed). However, posters and other publicity are the responsibility of the performer(s).
All Junior and Senior recitals will be video recorded. The recording will be archived and available to instructors and students approximately two weeks after the recital on Carleton’s Imagen account. Live streaming is not available for student recitals. If a student wishes to live stream their recital to friends or family who aren’t able to attend, the student may set up their own computer in the house and live stream via a video conferencing software on their computer such as Zoom.
General Recital Policies and Guidelines
Student recitals must be requested at least one term in advance. Working through and with the PAC office will ensure that the performance is properly scheduled, promoted, managed and recorded.
Students must give their top three preferred dates in the term for their recital, and the PAC Office will schedule the recital according to the student’s preferences if possible.
The Department will not honor “last minute” requests for recital scheduling, even if performance space happens to be open on the requested day. Such requests not only place an undue burden on the PAC office and staff, they also hamper the rehearsal and logistics schedules for other groups and performers.
Pre-recital rehearsals must be scheduled through the PAC office; please have your students plan their rehearsals well in advance in order to ensure both access and set up (e.g., piano logistics, etc.).
Honors in Music Performance
In the spring term of each year, the full-time faculty of the Department will consider awarding Honors in Music Performance to any deserving senior(s). All adjunct faculty members are invited to submit the name(s) of student(s) whom they think are deserving of this honor.
Awards are traditionally granted on the basis of a long-standing involvement with music making at Carleton, rather than on the basis of a single recital or performance. Honors in Music Performance need not be awarded every year. Nominations should remain confidential; it is not appropriate to inform a student that they are being nominated for consideration of this award.
Please submit any names (along with as much specific information on public performances, awards won, etc. as possible) to the Honors in Music Performance Coordinator by April 15.
