Elliott Erwitt (b. 1928) is an advertising, documentary, and fine art photographer. His black and white images are often amusing in their absurdity, and at times darkly ironic. Here he shows Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota, the site of the infamous 1890 Massacre of Lakota Indians by the U.S. military.
The dark clouds and violent thrust of the stark white church subtly convey Wounded Knee’s brutal past.
