George Biddle: My Neighbor, Al

George Biddle (1885–1973), best known as the administrator for the Works Progress Administration mural program during the Great Depression, shows his skills as an artist with My Neighbor, Al.

This painting, indebted to 17th-century Dutch master Rembrandt and other Realist painters, was once part of the Encyclopedia Britannica Collection, acquired as a gesture of corporate largesse toward American art and artists.
