Middle Eastern Languages at Carleton
The Department of Middle Eastern Languages offers introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses in Arabic. These can lead to completing a minor in Arabic, designed to strengthen language proficiency while deepening cultural understanding. Similarly, students can learn modern Hebrew in cultural context, in introductory through intermediate courses. There is no minor in Hebrew.
We also teach a range of courses, mostly in translation, on classical and modern Arabic literature, and on music and film in the Middle East. We offer courses focused more specifically on Israeli cinema, on Israeli and Palestinian film and fiction side by side, and on Jewish cultural history and memory in the Middle East and North Africa.
