Mellon Mays End of Year Celebration, Keynote Speaker M. Bianet Castellanos, Ph.D.

Tue, May 20, 2025 • 5:00pm - 6:00pm (1h) • Weitz Cinema

Keynote Speaker M. Bianet Castellanos, Ph.D. will present a talk on Convivencia as Collective Resistance in Mexico.

The international tourist resort city of Cancún is famous for its sun, sand, and beaches. Yet, among Yucatec Maya migrants who work in the city’s service and tourist economies, it is known as a place of precarity, especially during pandemic times. I examine how Yucatec Maya migrants create livable spaces and foster collective resistance through convivencia. As a Maya ethic of sociality and care based on caring for each, convivencia helps Yucatec Maya migrants experience the metropole as a space of reciprocity, survival, and healing.
