Each MMUF applicant must request recommendations from 2 faculty members who are familiar with their academic work and interests. One recommendation must come from the mentor for the proposed research project. The second recommendation must come from a professor in an academic field related to the project (at minimum, a humanities, arts, or humanistic social science field).
Faculty recommendations may be brief (one page) and are most helpful if they include (among other things) information about the following: the student’s academic performance and intellectual, scholarly promise; communicative and writing ability; maturity and self-confidence; potential for conducting independent research; motivation for graduate study in a humanities or humanistic social science Ph.D. program (not law school or medical school or any other professional program).
To the degree possible, please provide specific examples of how the student has exhibited a growth mindset. We will only seriously consider candidates who seek and value the guidance of faculty, who respond positively to feedback, and who show a commitment to engaging with the formative and foundational work related to their chosen topic.
Recommendations may be addressed to the “Members of the MMUF Selection Committee” and should be submitted to fellowships@carleton.edu by the same deadline indicated for student applications. Admissions decisions are made by Carleton’s MMUF leadership team — Cherlon Ussery, Sindy Fleming, and Marynel Ryan Van Zee.
