Mathematical Association of America (MAA)

MAA is an organization devoted to the improvement of the teaching of college mathematics. Carleton College is an institutional member of the MAA. The North Central Section of the MAA holds a spring and a fall meeting each year and many of the papers presented at these meetings are of interest to undergraduates.

Students who are planning a professional career in mathematics may well want to become members of the MAA while they are still in school. The MAA sponsors the famous Putnam Exam that is given each December. The department honors a small number of students each year by nominating them as members of the Association (and paying their dues).

Finally, the MMA publishes the American Mathematical Monthly and Mathematics Magazine, two excellent journals.

American Statistical Association (ASA)

If you are interested in statistics and its uses you may well find it worthwhile to become a student member of American Statistical Association.

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)

You should plan to become a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics if you intend to teach in K–12 schools.

American Mathematical Society (AMS)

The principal goal of the American Mathematical Society is to support research in mathematics. The AMS publishes Mathematical Reviews, the Bulletin, the Proceedings, and other research journals and monographs.

Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM)

The AWM encourages women and girls to study and to have active careers in the mathematical sciences, and to promote equal opportunity and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences.

National Association of Mathematicians (NAM)

The mission and purpose of NAM is to promote excellence in the mathematical sciences and promoting the mathematical development of all underrepresented minorities.

Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM)

SIAM promotes research and applications of mathematics and scientific computing in scientific and industrial settings.

Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS)

INFORMS promotes operations research and the management sciences.
