Title: Unfolding Mysteries at Burning Man

Abstract: Over 500 years ago, the Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer began exploring geometric mysteries related to unfolding boxes of all shapes and sizes.  We discuss this simple puzzle, and play with some higher-dimensional versions, all of which inspired the creation of an interactive 2-ton artwork that was displayed at Burning Man, the world's most influential sculpture showcase.  These ideas are filled with tantalizingly mathematics and has motivated numerous areas of exploration, including the recent James Webb space telescope.

This event is sponsored by The St. Olaf Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science, The Carleton Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Michael Morrill Fund.
