Math Across the Cannon: Moon Duchin

Mon, April 15, 2024 • 7:00pm - 8:00pm (1h) • Olin 149

Speaker: Moon Duchin, Professor of Mathematics at Tufts University

Title: Design for Democracy

Abstract: There is a classic, beautiful theory around fairness guarantees for electoral systems. But today, there's a pressing need to contemplate a democracy reboot; this shifts the question from assessment to design, and counsels us to focus on tendencies rather than guarantees. In this talk I'll briefly explain why many math modelers have warned that American democracy is in structural trouble, and I'll overview some new research directions that bring math, CS, and economics into conversation with civil rights, geography, policy, and law.
