Math/Stats Colloquium: Michael Watson

Tue, February 7, 2023 • 4:00pm - 5:00pm (1h) • CMC 206

Speaker: Michael Watson (Northwestern University, co-founder of Opex Analytics)

Title: Two careers for people who like to use data and math to solve problems

Abstract: Operations Research and Data Science are two exciting fields you should consider. This talk has some fun examples that show you the math behind kidney transplants, locating warehouses, inventory, and more. I’ll also define the three different things people mean when they say AI (Artificial Intelligence).  AI is a fast-moving field and we’ll cover examples from self-driving cars to finding bad potato chips. I’ve worked, hired, and taught in this field and will talk about the different ways you can get into it. The job market is large for people who like data, math, programming, and solving challenging problems.
