Title: Measuring volume change of Ecuador's glaciers
Abstract: Though only a small fraction of the world's glaciers, their high level of sensitivity makes the glaciers of the equatorial Andes important indicators of climate change. Though physical access to the glaciers is difficult, we take advantage of satellite imagery to study change of the size and volume of the glacier in the 21st century. In this talk, I will discuss the ways I've used tools from data science, math, and statistics in an analysis of the glaciers in the Ecuadoran Andes. There are interesting parallels to image processing, applications of geometry, GIS tools in R, and statistical models for handling spatial correlation.
