Here are a few sample schedules that show how you could earn a statistics major under a variety of circumstances. Note that the earlier you start the major, the more flexibility you will have in your choice, number and timing of electives. Here are some suggestions to consider when planning your major:

  • Stat 285 (Stat Consulting): This is a repeatable, 2 credit course that assigns community projects to student consulting groups. We suggest that you take this course before the end of your 3rd year so you can use the project on your resume when applying to jobs or graduate school during your senior year.
  • Stat 120 (Intro Stats): This course is not required for the statistics major but plenty of stats majors take this as their first course in statistics. If you already have an interest in statistics, you don’t need to take Stat 120 prior to completing the Math 240/Stat 250 sequence.
  • CS 111: This CS course typically has 2-3 sections offered each term, but many of these sections are sophomore priority. The sample schedules below encourage you to take CS 111 by the end of your second year because of the abundance of sophomore priority sections.
  • At least two of your three elective courses must be STAT courses taken in the Math/Stat department. Our 200-level elective courses can be taken after your first stat course (whatever that might be):
    • STAT 220 Intro to Data Science (prereq: Stat 120 or 230 or 250) is usually offered 2-3 times per year
    • STAT 260 Intro to Sampling Techniques (prereq: Stat 120 or 230 or 250) is usually offered in alternating years

Our 300-level elective courses (STAT 310, 320, 330, 340) all have Stat 250 prerequisites and most also require STAT 230.

  • The example schedules below are just suggestions and it is possible to move the timing of classes (especially electives) to accommodate an off-campus study term.

The suggestions above are only general guidelines. Make sure to consult with a Stat faculty member if you have any questions about completing the Statistics major.

This sample schedule starts calculus in calc 1. If you have a Calculus BC score of 4-5, you should take Math 211 in the fall or winter terms of year 1 to satisfy the prerequisite for Math 240.
