Here are a few sample schedules that show how you could earn a math major under a variety of circumstances. Note that the earlier you start the major, the more flexibility you will have in your choice, number and timing of electives. Here are some suggestions to consider when planning your major:
- Students starting in Math 101/111/120: Try to complete Math 210 (Calc 3) by winter of your 2nd year.
- Students starting in Math 211 (Calc BC score 4-5): Try to complete Math 211 (Multivariable Calc) by the end of your 1st year.
- All students: Try to complete Math 236 (Math Structures) by the end of your 2nd year.
- Many Math electives (courses numbering higher than Math 236) have Math 236 as a prerequisite and the sample schedules below generally follow this condition. But, there are opportunities to start electives before completing Math 236. The commonly offered electives that can be taken before Math 236 are
- Math 240 Probability (prereq: Math 210 or 211) is usually offered in fall and winter terms
- Math 241 Ordinary Differential Equations (prereq: Math 232) is usually offered every term
- Math 251 Chaotic Dynamics (prereq: Math 232) is usually offered in alternating years
- Math 271 Computational Mathematics (prereq: Math 232) is usually offered once a year
- There are also 200-level electives that you can take after completing Math 236. Two good options include Math 244 Geometries and Math 282 Elementary Theory of Numbers.
- The example schedules below are just suggestions and it is possible to move the timing of classes (especially electives) to accommodate an off-campus study term.
The suggestions above are only general guidelines. It is possible to complete the Math major without adhering to the timeline suggested above, but make sure to consult with a Math faculty member to make sure your plan is feasible.
