Applicants to BSM or BSM-Summer should have experience and demonstrated ability in writing mathematical proofs. Students from Carleton should have completed Mathematical Structures and at least one additional proof-based course (like Real Analysis or Abstract Algebra) before going to Budapest. Because applications to BSM for fall of junior year begin during winter term of sophomore year, applicants should have finished Structures before winter term begins, and be enrolled in an upper-level proof-based course during winter. For a strong student, being enrolled in Structures during winter term with the plan to take a second proof-based course in their spring term may be sufficient. However, the more proof-based courses that are completed before the application, the stronger the application.
Admission to BSM and BSM-Summer is competitive, and not all students who apply are admitted. Admission is on a rolling basis with early applications submitted in February. Successful applicants typically have solid grades in math courses, often in the B+ to A range.
Applicants to the younger, sister program BSME-Summer should have completed at least one year of undergraduate mathematics and have interest in the teaching of mathematics.
