Math majors at Carleton are required to take at least six courses designated above Math 236.  Of those, at most two of the courses may be taken outside the “Math” designation.  (That is, a few Stat or CS courses count as electives, and many BSM courses count as electives, but majors may only apply a total of two such courses toward their major.)

Credit toward the major:  Below is a list of BSM and BSME courses which would count as one of the two courses you are able to count toward the major.  Also indicated may be a course at Carleton that has substantial overlap with the Hungarian course, so both would not count toward the major.  There is also a list of BSM/E courses which would not count toward the major.  If there is a BSM/E course you would like to take which is on neither list, contact the Carleton department chair to see if it would count toward the major.  [Listed in square brackets is the “Math Area” which the course falls under for our major breadth requirement.]

The fall BSM semester in mathematics is considered an Off Campus Study Program, so the credits transfer as OCS credits toward Carleton graduation.  Students normally take three or four courses during the fall semester.  The summer programs, however, are not OCS programs.  The credits for those would transfer as “pre- or post-matriculation credits,” in the same category as AP courses, on which there is a strict limit of how many you may count toward graduation.  Students normally take two full courses during the BSM summer program and three full courses during the BSME summer program.
