Dear Math and Stat Department Alumni,
Greetings from the CMC! This year has seen a lot of great work and big accomplishments from our talented students and faculty. Students excelled in mathematical and statistical contests (including an unprecedented first-place finish in the Jerry Heuer MAA-NCS Team Competition), presented their research at local and national conferences (including one in France), and helped energize our groups GeMMS and Integration BIPOC, which sponsored many great events and enriched our community. Our faculty have earned many prestigious grants in recent years: one NSF CAREER grant (Caroline Turnage-Butterbaugh), four NSF LEAPS grants (Claudio Gómez-Gonzáles, Claire Kelling, Kate Meyer, and MuphyKate Montee), and two AMS-Simons PUI grants (Eric Egge and Rafe Jones). MurphyKate Montee and Claudio Gómez-Gonzáles earned two of Carleton’s four inaugural campus-wide Impact Awards, the Intellectual Engagement Award for MurphyKate and the Student Hero Award for Claudio. Caroline Turnage-Butterbaugh also gave a prominent invited address at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, DC.
Our students have been very involved with research this past year. This summer nine students are working on stats-based research under the guidance of Carleton faculty. Several students are also participating in REUs elsewhere in both math and stats. As part of the Joint Mathematics Meetings, Carleton students’ research featured in several talks at special sessions and several additional posters in the undergraduate poster session. In the Fall of 2025, seven Carleton students presented their research at the Northfield Undergraduate Mathematics Symposium.
Many of these activities, especially involving student research and comps, are supported in various ways by generous alumni and friends of the College and our department. We would like to thank all of you who have shared your time, money, or energy with our department and our students. We are especially grateful to donors like Michael Morrill ’81, Susan Roosenraad, and Elaine Tatham ’58, who have established endowed funds for our department. We are also grateful for contributions that allow us to honor student achievement through the Steven P. Galovich Prize in Mathematics and the Sy Schuster Prize for Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion. You can read about these prizes and see this year’s awardees on our webpage.
