Spring Term 2026

  • Monday, May 18: This Week in Science
    Welcome to Macalester College Associate Professor of Computer Science Abby Marsh and IBM Research Scientist Bibek Pokharel ’15. Dr. Marsh will use Western and Chinese internet case studies to explore privacy decisions as expressions of collective norms, while Dr. Pokharel will trace his journey from the early, chaotic days of quantum computing to his current industry work controlling quantum systems.
  • Monday, May 11: This Week in Science
    Congratulations to our Mathematics faculty who received Impact Awards as part of Carleton’s Employee Recognition Celebration. MurphyKate Montee received the Intellectual Engagement Award, and Claudio Gómez Gonzáles received the Student Hero Award.
  • Monday, May 4: This Week in Science
    We’re welcoming two STEM alumni back to campus this week to speak at department events: Luke Mager ’23 and Adam Rutkowski ’17.
  • Monday, April 27: This Week in Science
    This week, the Jean Dreyfus Lectureship brings Tim Swager, Professor of Chemistry at MIT, to campus to talk about “Optical Biosensors from Complex Dynamic Oil Droplets in Water.” Faith Vowler, the NASA Outreach Coordinator for the Hubble Telescope, will be speaking about her career path. And, everyone can wrap up the week at the Goodsell Observatory Open House on Friday!
  • Monday, April 20, 2026: This Week in Science
    It’s Climate Action Week! Students, faculty, and staff will be learning about Carleton’s energy systems, showing off their upcycled outfits, and hearing from ENTS faculty and students as they discuss climate justice.
  • Monday, April 13, 2026: This Week in Science
    We’re excited to welcome several special guests to campus this week to discuss a range of issues, including coevolution between threespine stickleback fish and tapeworm parasites, the rise of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance, and lead exposure in spices.
  • Monday, April 6, 2026: This Week in Science
    Psychology Professor Julie Neiworth will give her farewell presentation this week leading up to her retirement. We’ll also welcome three professors from other schools for special lectures, including Desiree Forsythe (biology), Carolyn Abbott (geometry), and Sanyu Mojola (sociology/public health).
  • Monday, March 30, 2026: This Week in Science
    Welcome back from spring break! The Kolenkow-Reitz Fellowship application deadline is on March 31. Several on-campus departments (Math/Stats, Academic Skills, Language Center, Math/Stats Skills, QRC, and CCCE) are hiring and their applications are due on April 5.

    This week Bits & Bytes is welcoming Justin Thomson ’01 and the chemistry department is welcoming Denise Okafor to speak. The Society of Physics students are celebrating their spirit week that will culminate with a winter picnic on the Hill of Three Oaks.

    We’re happy to welcome two guests to campus this week for talks in environmental studies and chemistry. Students should consider enrolling in a new interdisciplinary STEM course being offered in spring 2026, Vaccines: Science, Skeptics, and Stakeholders.     This week we’re excited to welcome Jedidiah Carlson from Macalester College to speak on campus as part of the Math/Stats Colloquium, host an information session for students about the Kolenkow-Reitz Fellowship, and see who takes home the gold in the Math vs. Stats dodgeball game.
