Title: Cubic Hypersurfaces and Rationality
Abstract: Algebraic geometry is at its core the study of zero sets of polynomials. The easiest examples to define are hypersurfaces - these are cut out by a single equation of a fixed degree. When the degree and dimension are low, these are often birational (or even isomorphic) to projective space. Such a hypersurface is said to be rational. However, as soon as the degree reaches 3, these cubic hypersurfaces become more complicated. We will survey rationality results for hypersurfaces of degree 3, ending with some recent results for symmetric cubic fourfolds.
