Special seminar: Maladaptive parental care? The consequences of parental behavior in the persistence of a deadly fungus.
Chloe Fouilloux, Ph.D., is a researcher at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, Department of Biology and Environmental Science. She will present on her work with frogs and aquatic fungus in her talk “Maladaptive parental care? The consequences of parental behavior in the persistence of a deadly fungus”.
Chloe is a finalist for a post-doc position working with Amanda Hund and this seminar is part of the interview process. Students will be asked to complete a short evaluation to share their thoughts.

Sometimes even the best parents make mistakes. Predators, abnormal climatic events, and novel pathogens are just a few of the ways that the quality of parental care can be compromised. In this seminar we will be travelling to a remote location in the Amazon to explore the transmission dynamics of a deadly aquatic fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) that has caused the extinction of over 100 amphibian species globally. Dendrobates tinctorius is a terrestrial poison frog with intensive parental care that has recently been found to be infected by this deadly pathogen. During this talk, we will investigate where this fungus occurs in the environment and its potential mechanisms of transmission to better understand how an aquatic pathogen has invaded a terrestrial habitat and what this implies for the future diversity of the region.
