Bits and Bytes hosts Jeff Ondich on "Coding With the Brakes Off: Lessons Learned by an AI-Assisted Programmer".

Like many computer programmers, I am trying to understand the implications of generative AI programming assistants like Claude Code and Cursor. Last summer, I experimented with coding assistants on toy software projects, with mixed results. Over winter break, I upped the stakes by using Claude Code and Gemini on larger projects that I actually cared about.

In this talk, I'll report on my experiences, which included some breathtaking successes, hilarious failures, and alarming security errors. I'll tell the stories of these projects, with plenty of details, and then I'll summarize my current beliefs about the ways coding assistants can be helpful and harmful, including their implications for the learning and productivity of both novice and experienced programmers.

Though some portions of this presentation will dig into coding details, the talk as a whole should be comprehensible to a general audience.

Join us for treats, beverages, community and conversation.
