"Homogeneous Catalytic Conversion of Carbon Dioxide to Methanol"
Atmospheric accumulation of carbon dioxide due to human activities has increased significantly over recent years as a result of fossil fuel combustion. Recycling carbon dioxide, a highly oxidized one-carbon waste material, into useful deoxygenated fuels has the potential to close the loop and prevent further greenhouse gas buildup. Methanol, an important one-carbon feedstock for many industrial processes with the potential to become a sustainable and clean burning fuel, is one such deoxygenated product. Dr. Karen Goldberg has investigated the catalytic deoxygenation of carbon dioxide with hydrogen gas as a promising route towards the fossil fuel-free production of methanol. Her research on this transformation centers on the careful design of homogeneous catalysts, with an eye towards understanding their reaction mechanisms so the catalysts and conditions can be optimized.
