"Total Synthesis of Lissodendoric Acid A and Interactive Teaching Tools for Organic Chemistry Education"

Official/Unofficial Bio

Lissodendoric acid A, a member of the manzamine family of alkaloids, is a structurally complex natural product that contains an azadecalin core and a macrocyclic ring. This presentation will describe our synthetic strategy leading to the first total synthesis of lissodendoric acid A. The synthesis centers on an enantiospecific Diels–Alder cycloaddition of a strained azacyclic allene to rapidly build the azadecalin core and install a challenging quaternary stereocenter. These studies demonstrate that strained cyclic allenes are valuable synthetic building blocks and can be employed efficiently in total synthesis. In addition to synthetic endeavors, this presentation will highlight our efforts in developing teaching tools that utilize modern technology to help promote student engagement in organic chemistry topics. These resources are aimed at both helping students understand the three-dimensional nature of molecules, as well as aiding educators in explaining difficult organic chemistry topics using interactive structures.
