Biology Seminar: Emily Fairfax '14, "Smokey the Beaver: How Beavers Build Landscape-scale Climate Resilience"
Mon, March 4, 2024
• 3:30pm
- 4:30pm (1h) • Olin 141
Natural beaver ecosystem engineering and our own attempts at beaver mimicry (e.g. Beaver Dam Analogs) are gaining popularity as a low‐cost, nature-based strategy to restore riverscapes and build climate resiliency at the landscape scale. The ecosystem services that beavers can provide are numerous, but having beavers for neighbors isn't everyone's idea of paradise. This talk covers the science of how beavers are related to climate change and ecological restoration, as well as how we influence beavers passively and actively through land management decisions.
