Math + Art Symposium

This research event brings together thinkers in the fields of mathematics and art.
- Presentations will explore artistic traditions including Islamic tiling and tessellation, Japanese sangaku tablets, African fractals, and more!
- A hands-on Islamic pattern workshop will offer the opportunity to learn essential geometry skills and to design tessellating patterns using a compass, ruler, and pencil. No prior math experience needed.
Keynote speaker: Francis Su
Benediktsson-Karwa Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College and former president of the Mathematical Association of America. He will speak about his book Mathematics for Human Flourishing, which makes the case that to miss out on mathematics is to live without experiencing some of humanity’s most beautiful ideas. This keynote is presented in partnership with the Carleton College Convocations lecture series.
