There are a lot of stories I could share (I met my future husband Dave in Geomorphology, her belly laugh, looking at brand-new Magellan images from Venus in Planetary Geomorph…) but something that still sticks with me today is the Cannon River lab we did in Geomorphology. It was a two-week lab that involved surveying the river and putting a lot of information together. I got an A on the paper, along with a note, “This was a pleasure to read.” That positive comment meant a lot to me, and gave me a lot of confidence that yes, really, this was something I was good at. I’ve done my best as a geomorphology professor myself to be generous with positive comments like those whenever I can, because you never know who might just need a boost like that to nudge them along a particular path.
