When Mary brought a bunch of geology students to Alaska in 2007, she snagged a couple of us local Carls as tour guides. I had been gone from Carleton about 20 years by then, but as soon as I joined the group, I immediately sensed a feeling I remembered well from the winter I spent with her in Death Valley. Mary positively radiates excitement in the field -– excitement about seeing cool stuff, and excitement about sharing those new experiences with students. It’s almost like a persistent, low buzz around her. For me, that excitement, as well as her curiosity about the world, is what made her such an inspiring person to learn from. Mary, best wishes for your retirement!
