I’ve been privileged to have attended many excellent schools and educational programs in my life, and have had many, many excellent teachers. Mark Hansell ranks in the top 5 of all time; he is truly a very gifted educator. I first met him in the fall of 1992 — my very first class at Carleton, first thing in the morning, bright and early. Although I’d had Chinese in my blood (so to speak), he made my “reentry” to the language so much easier and more enjoyable than it could have been. The next fall, I had the pleasure (and amusement) of joining about a dozen Carleton students who got to watch Mark attempt to navigate mainland China for the first time for a semester in Tianjin. I spent the next dozen or so years studying and working in the China field in various capacities before life led me on to other adventures. I’ll always have very fond memories of those years as Mark’s student. He was such a kind and generous teacher and had a significant influence on my life. Thank you, Mark. I hope you have a terrific retirement!
