Before I took Writing Systems with Mark in my sophomore year, I recall being very uncertain. I had recently switched into a Japanese major, but had no idea how I wanted to structure my major or what to focus on. So, I took Writing Systems on something of a lark. It was a more engaging class than I could have dared hope for, in no small part due to Mark. Everything about the course and the way he taught it was invigorating and fascinating. He got me invested in not just the class and my major, but also in Linguistics more generally. My days at Carleton were far better after he came into the picture. I’ll look back fondly on the times spent in his classes and during office hours for a long time to come. I wish you a comfortable and peaceful retirement.
