Prof. Hansell, I don’t expect you to remember me, but I took your course Asian Language Writing Systems in 1995 or so. I was a Soc/Anthro major but something about this course description piqued my curiosity. Well, my instincts were correct and your course ended up being hands-down the most interesting class I took in my four years at Carleton. I’ve remembered a decent amount of the content and find myself talking to my two girls (ages 10 and 12) about it often, along with countless people who I’ve shared tidbits with at social gatherings over the years. I continue to have an interest in linguistics and have done a lot of reading on the subject over the decades since. Anyway I wanted to let you know that you’ve made an impact on a lot of students over the years (not just the obvious ones!) and I am one of them. Congratulations on this important milestone and I hope you enjoy this next phase of your life.
