Dear Mai Lao-shi!
thank you for your guidance and kindness during my time at Carleton. I was certainly not the best at Chinese, but your patience really meant something to me. I work every day as professor myself at replicating your kindness and patience. It meant more than I can say. But further, despite my problems with tones, you got to know me as a student – and we bonded over our love of swimming. I’ll never forget you sharing about your growth doing butterfly and your sincere interest in what I was doing in the pool. I couldn’t believe you remembered me at my five year reunion, and it was so lovely to see you then. I hope in retirement you get to swim all you want and really have a great time. I’m so grateful for meeting and knowing from you and learning from you. Please take care! all best, Emily Newman
