On the first day of Chinese 101, I distinctly remember staring at Mai Laoshi in both fascination and horror as he repeated the same syllable using different tones while simultaneously pointing to objects in the classroom. I left class wondering if I had made a grave mistake in choosing to try Chinese. These classes turned out to be some of my favorite in college, largely due to Mai Laoshi’s teaching. I will always appreciate his good humor, patience, and enthusiasm for the language which carried over into his classes. Never have I been so excited to talk to someone about the discovery that my dad, whose mother grew up in China, says “chibaole” after burping despite having no knowledge of Chinese. Mai Laoshi, thank you also so much for your continued support for my post-graduate academic career, and I wish you a great retirement!
