Why use online small group discussions?

With the fast pace of Carleton’s 10-week terms, making the most of class time is important. Technology offers one way to prepare students in advance of class meetings. Sometimes that pre-class preparation might take the form of quizzing to see what students understand from a reading. Other times it might involve beginning a discussion in an online forum before class to produce deeper, richer in-class discussions. One way to foster online discussion beyond asking students to make a single post before class is to break students into small groups and have the groups engage in online discussions prior to class. To learn more, check out Carly Born’s recent blog post on the how and why of small group discussions.
