At a time of enormous change in the world, the United States, and particularly within higher education, should we be rethinking everything we know about community-based learning, or should we double down on what we know already? Maybe both. Asking hard questions about purpose, quality, and equity is an opportunity to articulate why these experiences matter for students’ learning and development as members of communities – small and large. These are also the questions that drive meaningful assessment. This workshop will invite participants to consider the ways in which assessment can be used as an equity-centered tool for unlocking the power of civic and community-based learning by telling the story of efficacy, rather than assuming it. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on how existing curricular practices can be maximized to promote transparency for students’ development, increase collaboration across experiences, and leverage evidence for improvement.
