Pedagogical Care: What It Is (and Isn’t), and Why it Matters for Faculty (and Student) Success

Thu, April 3, 2025 • 8:30am - 9:45am (1h 15m) • Weitz 236

Student service and care work is increasingly likely to be demanded of faculty by students, faculty and administrators.  Unfortunately, most of these expectations run counter to the scholarship resulting in negative impacts for student learning and faculty success. To reduce these negative outcomes, participants will learn about the research on the additional (& unsustainable) service and care labor unfairly expected of faculty. They will also learn how the scholarship defines what is effective pedagogical care–as well as what is not. This is done in an interactive format so participants can identify and dismantle the myths of pedagogical care that harm faculty success and student learning. At the end, participants will have a stronger understanding of the evidenced-based pedagogical care that should be practiced to support both faculty well-being and student success.

All faculty and staff are welcome; individuals with roles in hiring, mentoring, and promotion are particularly encouraged to attend.  Please bring a laptop or tablet.
