LTC Lunch - LTC on Tour - The Carleton Student Organic Farm: Opportunities in Place-Based Education
With a new Farm Manager and intentional support for “sustainability across the curriculum” in Carleton 2033! The Student Organic Farm invites new curricular linkages opportunities. The farm is a space where students learn and practice sustainability, persistence, and ethical collaboration; it is also a site for reflection and community connection around land, food, culture and traditions.
In this session, we will explore the farm as a site for place-based education and community connection, offering students ways to engage directly with the food, culture, and environment and each other. We invite you to join us and learn and share ideas.
Participants will:
- Explore examples of how faculty connect the farm to their curricular goals and interests, or where they are excited to see opportunities to expand experiential learning at the student farm.
- Hear from the Sustainability Office about how we are partnering to support campus food systems, onsite composting, and conducting research informed by Minnesota vegetable growers.
- Share your ideas for expanding learning and community building at the farm around the topics and approaches that interest you. Contribute to our understanding and development of possibilities.
Farm tours are available throughout the year to consider opportunities. Fall is harvest if you are eager to try food while at the farm.
Speakers:
Sarah Fortner, Director of Sustainability and Amanda Sames, Farm Manager, Sustainability education opportunities at the farm
Sarah Kennedy, Archeology, Growing Teosinte at the Carleton Organic Farm to promote cultural connection
Dan Maxbauer, Geology, Measuring soil chemistry to bring climate solutions home
Lin Su Winton, CUBES, Estimating total pepper yields from a single volunteer harvest, back of the envelope math
