Please join us on Thursday, 11 Oct, at 4:00 in **Olin 02** for the first Linguistics Colloquium of the fall term:
‘The Interface of Pragmatics and Syntax in Basque Discourse’
Colloquium by Phyllis Winchester Bellver
Associate Professor of Spanish and Chair of Spanish and Linguistics Programs
Centre College (Danville, Kentucky)
In this talk, Dr. Bellver will talk about salient characteristics of the Basque language. She will present certain basic yet controversial grammatical features of the language: free word order, topic and focus positions, and system-wide ergativity. Research findings will be presented concerning the interplay of pragmatics and syntax as revealed in discourse strategies of native speakers of Basque from Azpeitia (Loyola), Spain.
