“To me, one of the cool things about linguistics is that it scientifically dissects one of the most human things about us. I think that kind of meta-thinking requires a kind of perspective that expands your mind and reveals the mystery of being human.
The fact that as humans we can not only do this amazing thing called language but that we can explore how we do that and how it works is a good example of the meta-cognition that gives us our name, Homo sapiens sapiens. I also think this self-awareness is the basis for moral reflection and empathy which are so needed right now and always.”
