The one time my degree has proven truly relevant was following my late girlfriend’s glioblastoma diagnosis. The cancer specifically attacked lingual functions, and it took leveraging every aspect of linguistics to care for her, to help her retain the ability to communicate until she died. This was a great comfort, as no one else, from surgeon to radiologist to nursing staff, was prepared or able to care for the neural processes necessary to interact with their patient. Language is living as a human with dignity; language is vital.
