“Linguistics taught me to pay special attention when data don’t fit into existing models. When that happens, it’s up to you as a Linguist to break apart the rules and create better ones so that no data gets excluded. It’s a lesson I use everyday in my job now. I pay special attention to data coming from some of the world’s most vulnerable communities, and then work on the ground to change government and humanitarian responses so that nobody is left behind.”
