Lighten Up! is Carleton’s zero waste student move out program, where students donate a variety of items before they leave campus for the summer. The donations are then sold to the public at a huge weekend-long sale.

Carleton students clean out their dorm rooms and lockers, donating clothing, small furniture, household items, books, bedding, sport equipment, and more. The sale is open to the public and draws large crowds of bargain hunters — items are priced to sell!
Lighten Up manages 2.5% of Carleton’s total waste stream by diverting 23 tons of student materials from the landfill and serving as an excellent lesson in sustainable living and waste management

Last year’s sale raised $28,500 for Northfield area nonprofits, providing essential operating funds. It also kept $4,000 worth of school supplies out of the trash and got it into the hands of local families.
Every year the Center for Community & Civic Engagement mobilizes a team of student workers, Custodial Services, CCCE staff, and volunteers to organize and coordinate the sale. Looking for student work or volunteer hours? Let us know!
