Cardiovascular training can be done through many different types of exercise. They are broadly separated into impact or no-impact exercises. Impact exercises are any exercises that have some sudden force associated with each repetition. Examples include aerobics, running, walking, boxing or kickboxing, and dance.

Impact exercises build bone density but if overdone are more likely to cause injuries. No-impact exercises are those that have no sudden forces associated with them. These include Nordic skiing, swimming, and cycling. No-impact exercises are easier on joints but at the same time do not build strengthen bones to the same degree.
