InterLibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that allows Carleton students, staff, and faculty to request items that Carleton and St. Olaf do not own from other libraries. Physical ILL material is checked out and returned at the circulation desk on the main floor of the library. Electronic ILL materials will be available through your ILLiad account.

Check out the guide to learn how to find and request items from other libraries.

Our InterLibrary Loan request system is ILLiad.  Log in with your Carleton username and password to request items, to track requests you’ve already made, or to renew items before they are due.

ILL Policies

InterLibrary loan (ILL) is an essential and vital service that makes material available to patrons through borrowing and lending. The following information and policies govern interlibrary loan services at Carleton College.

1. Who May Use ILL

Interlibrary loan services are available to all current students, staff, and faculty at Carleton. A current Carleton username and password is needed to request materials through interlibrary loan.

2. What Can Be Borrowed

Library materials which are not available at either Carleton or St. Olaf College can be borrowed for study and research from other North American libraries. Material is borrowed and loaned in accordance with Carleton College’s copyright policy. Items that are missing from Carleton Library, have been sent temporarily to the bindery, or are on order for the Library can also be requested through ILL. Interlibrary Loan will not request textbooks currently used and required for classes.

3. Location of ILL Office

The ILL office is located in Room 448, Gould Library. The office is generally staffed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Contact Brenda Hellen (507-222-4257) with ILL questions.

4. Time to Receive ILL Materials

Allow at least two weeks to receive materials. The length of time for materials to arrived depends on the lending library. Requests are processed Monday-Friday. When loans arrive you will be notified via e-mail.

5. Checking Out & Returning ILL Materials

Physical ILL material is checked out and returned at the circulation desk on the main floor of the library. Electronic ILL materials will be available through your ILLiad account.

6. Loan Period

The loan period varies and is determined by the lending library.

7. Renewals

Renewal requests can be made prior to the due date by logging into your Illiad account. Instructions for placing renewal requests are printed on the ILL slip on the front of your ILL book. Renewal requests are determined by the lending library. You will be notified if the renewal request is granted or denied.

8. Recall

Interlibrary loan items may be recalled at anytime by the lending library and will need to be returned within two days.

9. Restrictions on ILL Loans

Lending libraries determine any conditions regarding the use of their materials. Loans designated for “In Library Use Only” must be kept at the circulation desk when not in use.

10. Fees

You may incur an overdue fine when ILL items are returned after the due date. The amount of the overdue fine is determined by the lending library. A $60 replacement fee will be incurred when ILL items are lost.
