Gould Library librarians customize their instruction to the College curriculum. Our goal is to advance the learning goals of your class. We partner with you to create information literacy instruction for individual classes, departments, and students. Librarians can also partner with each other. We offer combined teaching in research practices, Archives, Special Collections, government documents, disciplinary practices, and more. Course Reserves is a library service offered to make course materials available to students. Materials can include print/physical items and media. This service allows students access to course-related print materials for free.
When an instructor makes a course reserve request, materials are relocated to the circulation desk of the library. Each reserve item has a loan period of 2 hours or 2 days for books and 4 hours for DVDs. This guarantees that students have fair access to the materials throughout the duration of the course.
Many reserve items are materials already owned by the library. If the library does not own the materials, we will work with you to purchase them.
To place library materials on reserve, you should complete a Course Reserves Request Form. There are two ways to access this form:
Access the Reserves Request Form via Catalyst. When you are logged in, you will see a link to the Course Reserves Form within the item record. Look for the Request Option (in yellow box) which includes “Place on Course Reserves for your students.” Select this link to bring up a Reserves Request Form that is pre-filled with the library item’s bibliographic record.
When both a print copy and an electronic version exist in our collection, our default practice is to link to the electronic version rather than place the physical copy on the Reserve shelf. If you have a specific wish for the print copy to be placed on Reserves as well, please let us know and we will make both the electronic and physical items available.
Your personal copies of books and DVDs may be placed on reserve. Please bring these items to the Circulation Desk. There, you will be asked to document your name, your course name and number, and the reserve period length that applies.
Articles, book chapters, and other digital resources should be placed directly in your course Moodle site. If at all possible, you should link to resources available in library databases. Please see our guide on creating stable links to library resources for best practices. Items that are not available electronically through the library may be scanned and uploaded as long as you adhere to the copyright guidelines as outlined in the Faculty Handbook.
Please Plan Ahead
Reserve items are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Reserves are not processed on weekends.
If you have questions
Brenda Hellen is the Reserves Specialist. If you have questions related to placing materials on reserve, please e-mail or call 507-222-4257.
What may and may not be placed on reserve
Items that may be placed on reserve include most physical materials owned by Carleton or St. Olaf Libraries. E-resources available at Carleton, including e-books and streaming videos, may also be placed “on Reserve” via links associated with a given course in Catalyst. Personal copies of books and DVDs can be placed on reserve.
We do not place the following categories of items on reserve:
Rented or copied DVDs
Interlibrary Loan materials
Special Collections materials
The library provides many online resources which you may want to link to from your Moodle course page as course resources. If you have any questions or problems with these resources, or if you would like to include resources not mentioned on this sheet, please feel free to contact your library liaison. They will be happy to help you get these links into Moodle.
For copyright reasons, it’s best to link to existing full text rather than upload readings to Moodle. Here is how to get good links into Moodle so that your students get direct access to full text readings.
Find a stable URL
When using library search tools, most of the URLs that you will see in your address bar are dynamic, working once and then not necessarily working again. In order to find a link that will be sure to work for your students, look for “Stable URLs” or “Permalinks.” Sometimes these are also held in the suggested citation generated by the research database.
Here are some places to look for stable URLs in typical databases.
Make library URL work for off-campus access
Many students work in coffee shops or other off campus spaces. Providing a “proxified” URL will allow them access to the readings as if they were on campus by sending them through our proxy server, EZproxy.
See if the link already has “ezproxy” somewhere in the URL. If it does, you’re done!
If the link does not have “ezproxy” somewhere in the url, then go to the Gould Guide to Off-Campus Library Access and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Enter your stable URL into the box provided and click “Make EZProxy Link.” Then use the resulting URL on your Moodle site.
Another option is to use this bookmarklet:
Simply drag the link to your browser’s bookmark toolbar. Then, when you are in the “Link to a File or Web Page” form in your Moodle course, paste the article URL into the “Location” box, leave your cursor in that box, and click your bookmarklet. The proxy address should automatically appear in front of the database or article URL.
Carleton College faculty and staff are allowed to designate chosen individuals to act as proxy representatives when checking out materials. Proxy representatives will not use a dedicated proxy card; instead, proxy representatives will only need their personal OneCards in order to check materials out on behalf of designated faculty and staff. Checked out items will be on the faculty or staff person’s own library account. The faculty/staff member is responsible for the return of borrowed materials and/or replacement costs for damaged or billed material.
Please use the form below to indicate which faculty and staff need proxy representatives and which individuals are authorized to serve as the representatives. At the bottom of the form you can also indicate any changes that need to be made to your current proxy arrangements.
