Tim Lloyd, Prairie Vessels

Timothy Lloyd, Class of 1941 Professor of Art and the Liberal Arts, Emeritus, works primarily in silver, but he also uses other metals to create unique jewelry, medals, sculptures and vessels. His work is widely recognized and admired in national and international art circles. Visit the entryway of the library to see three vessels from his Prairie series.

A few years ago, I received a State Arts Board grant to make a series of vessels based on plant forms from local native prairies. These pieces are a result of that study, using various forbs and grasses collected from the Carleton Arboretum prairies to press into metal and then form into vessels. The final pieces give a sense of the way grasses and wild floral plants grow and respond to their surroundings, wind, rain, warmth, and cold. The vessels here are not meant to hold liquid but to be thought of as holding a space.
