Fred Hagstrom, Rae Schupack Nathan Professor of Art, retires this year after 37 years teaching and mentoring students at Carleton.
We are grateful for the role he has played in helping to build Carleton’s collection of artist’s books, and lucky to hold a complete collection of his works in Gould Library’s Special Collections, a selection of which are on view in this exhibit.
“… You could say that some of my print work is quite conservative, but I have always valued the history of printmaking in the way that it has been, and continues to be, a leading medium in issues of social justice. I was less able to explore those issues in single prints, but I have attempted to do so more through the longer-form format of my book works.”

Hagstrom earned his undergraduate degree from Hamline University in 1977, and his graduate degree from the University of Nebraska 1982. He worked at Atelier 17 in Paris, and taught at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Hagstrom’s prints are held in a number of public collections, including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Walker Art Center, the Minnesota Museum of Art and the Weisman Museum at the University of Minnesota. His artist’s books are held in over 50 public collections, including the Library of Congress.
