The students of LATN 236: “Plautus and Roman Comedy” spent much of Fall term reading the complete, original Latin play “The Haunted House” (Mostellaria), by Roman playwright Plautus. They also studied artifacts and books in the Perlman Teaching Collection and in Gould Library‘s Special Collections. Several of these artifacts and books are on display in this exhibit.

“Our goal with this exhibit is to showcase some of the unique items that can be found on Carleton’s campus and their relevance to the study of ancient comedy, as well as to demonstrate two fundamental ideas about comedy in Rome. First, that it was, indeed, hilarious; and second, that many of the stock characters and scenes found on the Roman stage remain influential in modern sitcoms and stage-plays.”
