This exhibit highlights research conducted by the students enrolled in The Byzantine World & Its Neighbors (HIST 233), taught by Professor of History and Director of Medieval and Renaissance Studies William North.

The nine manuscript facsimiles on view in this exhibition present a wide range of works from the Byzantine period, both in style and function. In “envisioning the spirit,” these illustrated books depict conceptions of the divine and offer insight into the religious practices of the era. At the same time, they “inscribe the voice” through textual and visual representations of Byzantine life, providing modern scholars with fragments of Byzantine language and discourse from which to learn.

Please join us for a gathering during week nine with Professor William North and student curators to learn more about the exhibit. (Date and time to be announced soon!)

Curated by students of Professor William North with guidance and assistance from Curator Zoe Adler and Special Collections Librarian Jackie Beckey.
