Rare Looks in Special Collections: A Kaleidoscope of Jewish Worlds in Historic Passover Haggadahs

Tue, September 26, 2023 • 4:30pm - 5:30pm (1h) • Gould Library Athenaeum

Did you know that we have a wonderful collection of historic Passover Haggadahs, or home guides for the Jewish Passover Seder (service and meal) in the Library? For many years Stacy Beckwith, Professor of Hebrew and Judaic Studies, has been bringing students in her Hebrew and Jewish Collective Memory classes to Special Collection for comparative work with these culturally revealing books.

Join us at 4:30 pm as Stacy and Kaylah Janis '26 share how Haggadahs we have from medieval Spain, Enlightenment-era Europe, the U.S. during the Holocaust, and Israel and the U.S. in the 1960s, show that those around the Passover table often pictured the Jewish exodus from ancient Egypt in familiar, contemporary images. So through these books we can view many different Jewish worlds!
